Most people regard travel insurance as an added expense or a luxury but in fact it is the most important purchase of your whole family vacation, especially when travelling with children and I will tell you why.
After working as travel agent for many years, I have seen case after case of incidents where clients were left in distress or financially devastated because they chose not to take the time or didn't feel it was important to spend the few extra dollars to make sure their families were protected.
I realized what a risk I had been taking by not purchasing travel insurance for my vacations. I never travel without proper travel insurance.
No one expects an accident to happen, what if your family is at the beach enjoying your Caribbean vacation and your child cuts his foot open on a rock or you suddenly have an appendicitis attack?
Obtaining healthcare in some parts of the world can be tricky. Some hospitals won't provide any treatment--or won't allow a patient to be discharged--until the hospital has received a guarantee of payment. This means you'll have to pay in advance , perhaps as much as tens of thousands of dollars, with your credit card. Of course, for this to work the hospital must accept foreign credit cards and your card must have a sufficient credit limit.
In addition, remember that leaving your destination--for a place with higher quality medical care or to return home where your regular insurance is accepted--can be difficult and extremely costly to arrange. Emergencies are rare but everyone should have a contingency plan and trip medical insurance from your
travel insurance company
which provides just that.
Trip cancellation insurance is also an very important coverage to have from your travel insurance company. It may come as something of a revelation to find out that if for whatever reason you need to cancel your trip, most are 100% non refundable and you will lose the entire cost of your trip.
Check the fine print of your travel documents, you may be surprised but it is there. If you think the tour company or the airline will feel sorry for you and refund your tickets, I guarantee it will not happen. If they did this for everyone, they would quickly be out of business.
What happened to the Smith family?
There was the case of the "Smith" family that had booked a family ski trip and paid $5,000 in advance but did not
contact their travel insurance company. However, shortly before their departure, Jr broke his leg and was instructed by the Doctor not to fly.
With it being so close to departure, their ski vacation was 100% non refundable, they had to cancel their trip and lost all their money.
The Jones family was better off....
Then there was the case of the "Jones" family who planned a cruise which was costing just over $4,000. Fortunately they had the foresight to take out cancellation coverage for the entire trip from their travel insurance company, with each family member having their own policy.
Two days prior to departure,
Mr Jones developed a problem that required emergency surgery. The cruise vacation had to be cancelled but most of the trip carried a 100 percent cancellation fee and the result was a payout of $3,800 from their travel insurance company. They rebooked their trip at a later date.
Considering the cost of vacations these days, it is not worth it to risk it and leave it to chance. The peace of mind that travel insurance provides is unbelievable. You can relax and enjoy yourself knowing that whatever happens, your family is protected by your travel insurance company.

Travel Insurance - Questions and Answers
Q. How are the insurance companies rated? I want to make sure that we choose a reliable insurance company that has an excellent track record.
A. We have insurance company ratings online! When viewing the plans in the products area or while comparing or viewing in the quote area, each insurance company's A.M. Best rating is displayed.
Q. Is there trip insurance available to cover the need to cancel a trip due to the death of a close family member - not one who is traveling on the particular trip?
A. Yes, most of our package policies provide coverage for trip cancellation due to a non-traveling family member's death or illness requiring you to stay home.
Q. I made my own travel arrangements and did not go through an agency, can I insure my trip?
A. Yes, all of our policies can be used by people making their own travel arrangements. The policies will cover the pre-paid, non-refundable travel arrangements that you have made.
Q. What is the latest date I can purchase travel insurance?
A. You can purchase a policy up to the day before you travel. However, our recommendation is to purchase as soon as possible to maximize your benefits. If you wait, you always run the risk that something will happen before you buy your insurance and you won't be covered.
Q. When is the best time to purchase travel insurance?
A. To receive the most benefit from the travel policy you must purchase the insurance within 7 to 21 days (varies by company and plan) of making your initial trip payment. If the insurance is purchased within the 7 - 21 day period you receive two enhancements (varies by company and plan) to the policy.
1. protection against the financial default of a tour operator, airline or cruise line. (depends on company) 2. the pre-existing medical condition exclusion is usually waived (again, depends on company and plan).
Most companies count the day you make the first trip payment as day one (not the day the check is cashed).
Q. I booked part of my vacation, but not the flight. I would like to purchase travel insurance within the pre-existing condition exclusion waiver period. Do I have to wait until the flight is booked?
A. You can certainly purchase the travel insurance right away. You will probably want to include the cost of your airline tickets in the trip cost. If you can find out what the price of the tickets will be before purchasing them, you can include that amount in the total trip cost. If not, an estimate will have to do.
Q. I am interested in travel insurance policies that cover cancellation for any reason, for example if I couldn't get off work. Does this exist?
A. Trip cancellation coverages are "named peril" policies, meaning they will only cover you for a specific covered reason named in the policy. None of them provide coverage for "any reason" or for a person's inability to get time off from work. Generally they cover cancellations due to health, weather, airline or cruise line bankruptcy, etc.
Q. What is the First Trip Payment Date?
A. The First Trip Payment Date is the date that you first made a payment for the trip you want to insure. This is the date the check is written not the date it is cashed
Q. How do I determine the total cost of the trip?
A. To determine the insurable cost of the trip, add together the cost of all of your non-refundable pre-paid trip arrangements.
